The Paper Boat

Rain drummed on the window of a small apartment above a bakery. Seven-year-old Mia, in the red raincoat she refused to take off, pressed her nose to the glass.

"Grandpa, the rain ate my whole Saturday," she sighed.

Grandpa Tomas, with a white beard and a blue knitted cardigan, spread yesterday's newspaper on the kitchen table. "Then let's feed the rain something better."

His big, careful hands folded the paper once, twice, and again. Mia copied every fold, her tongue poking out, until a small paper boat sat in her palm.

Down on the street, the gutter had become a rushing little river. Mia knelt in her yellow rubber boots and set the boat on the water. It spun once, then sailed.

She ran beside it, splashing through the puddles, while Grandpa followed under a big black umbrella, laughing.

At the corner, the boat slipped into a drain. Mia gasped. "No!"

Grandpa pointed across the road. There, where the water poured into the old canal, the little boat bobbed out into the evening light.

It drifted toward the harbor, past the glowing lamps, until it was only a white dot on the dark water. Mia waved and waved.

"Where will it go?" she asked.

Grandpa squeezed her hand. "Wherever brave things go."
